I'm having the same issue. I think it has to do with the new launcher, because with the old launcher, this problem didn't occur. Don't quote me on this, but I think it has to do with the fact that the launcher doesn't use java, yet the game does. That's just a theory.
It is the latest version. I purchased it from mojang yesterday and downloaded it for my son. thanks for your help
I also updated the drivers last night.

Curse PremiumI also updated the drivers last night.
Try setting the version to 1.7.2, if that works, but 1.7.4 does not, then it definitely is.
