Hello everyone, I have a problem and hope you guys can help me. It seems to me that after Client 1.7 and on none of the newer versions run on Pentium 4 2.8Ghz HT anymore. It lags too much and FPS go between 2-14.
I tried latest Java but that made things run slower so I stuck with Java 7. ATI drivers are latest for my X1950 Pro which is 9.3. My graphics card runs on AGPx8 and supports 2.1 OpenGL. My OS is very clean and run low processes from my screenshot you see I had 24 processes on. Also have paging 3GB file on separate HDD. My RAM is 2GB PC3200 400MHz.
In client video settings I set everything to low.
Graphics: Fast
Smooth Lighting: Off
3D Anaglyph: off
GUI scale: large
Clouds: off
Fullscreen: off
Mipmap levels: 4
Use VBOs: off
Max Frame rate: 40 FPS even though I never get anywhere near that my fps always below 14
View bobbing: on
Brightness: bright
Particles: Minimal
Vsync: off (I tried it on and made no difference)
Alternate blocks: off
Entity shadows: off
FOV: 72
I know its a bit old and its been awhile since I played Minecraft but a year ago it ran better. Now its just hopeless. There is nothing I can do? Any tweaks or some kind of mod or something? Give me something to work with here!!
I tested Minecraft on another PC I has newer processor, ram, motherboard, graphics, OS. Yet Minecraft runs slow on the lowest settings at 10fps - 19fps. So what the heck is going on with Minecraft 1.8.1??? Can anyone even run it? Or do I need like a 8 core cpu or something?
Motherboard: Asrock 4CoreDual-Sata2 Bios 2.20a
Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 1.8Ghz OC'ed to 2.1 Ghz (stable and temp range 30-40C with Evo 212 Heatsink 3x120MM fans)
RAM: 2x2GB PC2-6400 DDR2 667Mhz NON-ECC
HDD: 160GB 7200RPM 8MB IDE HDD
Windows 7 SP1 x86 fully updated.
Graphics: HIS ATI 4650 1GB DDR3 on AGPX8. Supports DX 10.1, Pixel Shaders 4.1 and OpenGL 3.3. Settings set for performance instead of quality in ATI Catalyst. (STOCK NO OC ) Catalyst v 12.3 which is last stable version for AGP dated March 2012.
Thanks Matthew, I have heard of Advanced SystemCare but honestly never trusted those auto pc tune up utilities. I tried them before awhile ago and they destroyed the OS completely removing Windows .dlls that were important lol I actually was reading about Razer Cortex, and could not find solid proof it does work. But I take you have used it and seen results? I shall give it a try, although my systems run bare minimum services in Windows XP SP3 I have it down to 21 services on idle when no program is open. In Windows 7 I have it on 30 services therefore I might not see as a big difference as other people.
I have seen some people suggest optifine mod. Is that something that could get me banned from multiplayer servers? Some want no mods at all. So what servers can I go on if I choose to have this so called optifine mod? Where to get it anyone give me direct link to official version? Thanks
I am looking for some sort of solution for my current hardware. If life was that simple everyone would buy a new computer every single week. Also you need to define what NEW system is. I saw a thread of a guy with quad core and 970 having lag issues too. What is new to you? Because in my second machine has 2.1 Ghz dual core, AMD 4650 1GB DDR3, 4GB DDR2 PC6400 barely does 5fps more than my Pentium 4 machine. That is on a clean install of Windows 7 SP1. So what exactly is a good machine for Minecraft now? What machine do I need to run more than 19FPS on Minecraft?
In my opinion I think newer version 1.8/1.8.1 need more optimization. Visually this game does not look that advance to be requiring more power than other more graphic intense games.
If you provide a potential budget, most people on this forum could put together parts for a PC that could run minecraft easily for under $500. If you're that bad off to run minecraft I'd suggest getting a Xbox 360 and play on that version. This game has made recent changes that require you to have a decent PC now. I'm afraid there's not much you can do but finally upgrade or get a cheap 360 for like $40-$50 or so and play that version. I know I'm being rather unsympathetic but if every game was held back for bad hardware we'd never see progress.

I have looked through forums and many people get lag spikes with latest version even with quad core machines so I didn't want to believe just because my machine is a bit old is the main issue.. Like I mention above I do have a newer 2007-2009 era PC with dual core at 2.1 Ghz and 2MB L2 cache. Yet its only 5fps faster than my P4 machine and its still falls below 19fps. I did buy a Q6600 2.4Ghz that I am replacing my 2.1Ghs dualcore, so maybe I'll see a difference. Maybe quad core from 2008 is not good enough.....
Maybe I am stubborn but really wanted to see my P4 machine run the game at 25-30fps on latest version. Cortex didn't do anything for me, I kind of figure since I have all unnecessary services turn off/set to manual. I have yet to try optifine, I'm scare having a modded client will get me banned on multiplayer servers. But that will be my next try.
If my Pentium 4 were to run at higher frenquency like 3.4Ghz would it be better or stay same lag of 2-14fps?
I was hoping if people could let me know if maybe running game with Java 6 would help or not make a difference? I saw some sort of opengl fix online not sure if it works. Read its comments and says it just deletes some in game files and can make game faster. I'll like to know what actual game files can be deleted without sacrificing stability?
Has anyone tried this? Although my graphics supposely has 2.1 opengl I wonder if its truly being used. Card x1950 originally was designed for 2.0 and with later updates it became updated to 2.1. http://www.planetminecraft.com/mod/mod-opengl-fixer/
I have noticed my CPU usage is maxed out when I play. Screenshot here http://i61.tinypic.com/23h1vl2.jpg

GET A NEW PC!
Minecraft 1.7 + is obviously too resource heavy so play an older version or get a new pc
That's not recommended. Why do you advise him to buy a new PC?
