In order of importance:



1) Upgrade to Java 8.

2) Make sure you video card driver is updated.

3) Make sure you have the most updated version of OpenGL your video card supports.

4) Install Optifine.

5) Use realistic settings for your machine i.e. the setting that gives you at least 25-30 FPS. Try turning on and off parameters and see how it goes.

6) Close unnecessary processes before starting the game.

7) Don't use mods or HD texture packs.

I don't think so. That kind of thing happens more often in vanilla than in Optifine, at least for me. It looks like some sort of lag between the internal server and the client, but I don't really know.

The lag introduced with latest versions, at least since the game was separated in a local server and client, is, well... almost a mistery. It has to do with server-client communication, Java's garbage collection issues, how OpenGL works... it's a technical mess.

Will this help you? Nope. I use an old laptop so I spent a lot of time trying to get the most FPS out of it and I don't think there's anything more one can do.
