Er...what's your total system memory?
Also if you go into your control panel or right click on your "my computer" icon, what kind of operating system do you have, 32 or 64 bit windows?
Im running 64 bit windows, and I have 4 gigs of ram, so I dont know why it wouldnt work with 2 selected
Ok that's good. That just means that the java you're using is 32 bit and not 64 bit.
So first you need to do is make sure you have 64 bit java installed on your system. I would say likely yes since you were running it before. Open a command window and type in
java -version
If you have 64 bit installed, and it'll likely be newer, it will say so in the output. If not, get it here: https://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp
Make sure you pick the one that says windows 64 bit. Install.
Then click on the tab that says Java and then on the button that says View. It'll list all the java versions you have and all the file paths for them. Copy the one for the latest java version you have (that should be java 8).
In the new launcher, go Edit Profile, go down to Java executable, check the checkbox and then paste in java path for your 64-bit java. Save profile and then your 2G assignment should work fine.
Can someone help me too, I am using the new launcher and I installed forge, liteloader, shaders, and optifine and I click play and it doesn't go to the menus it just doesn't open, its not there. Can someone help me please?

So, for no apparent reason, my minecraft has started doing this again. I click play, and it never loads. I have changed nothing whatsoever since you all helped me fix it. Anyone have any ideas? Is my minecraft just possessed or what?

Once you confirm you have 64 bit java, you need to find what its file path is. Follow this:
