was playing minecraft about 2 weeks ago then went to play yesterday and it would not open the launcher. i tried deleting and re-downloading and still has not worked. it says on the minecraft page that the launcher does not need java, just the game does. the when i go to open the launcher nothing pops up at all. thank you for your time.

Well, I would try updating to the latest version of java. It DOES need java unless your using one of the experimental builds Mojang has released (2 on reddit).
i cant get the latest java (8u25) there is a bug or something and keeps giving me install errors. it was working perfectly fine like 2 weeks ago
could it be a windows update?

Well, the Minecraft launchers update often, sometimes implementing a better/newer Java version. What Windows version do you have (as well as the type: 32-bit/64-bit?)? And regardless, before installing Java, you must uninstall any version you may have had previously (typically through the control panel). That's probably your problem with installing newer versions of Java.
windows 8.1 and 64bit. i uninstall everything before installing anew versions.and i will gove it a try thank you

If none of these work, try downloading on of the experimental builds of the Minecraft launcher (http://www.reddit.com/r/Minecraft/comments/2pkxpx/we_need_your_help_testing_the_new_minecraft/). It has it's own directory for a java version solely for the use of Minecraft that's included with the launcher.
