I have an older computer in my basement collecting dust, I was wanting to get it setup to play minecraft with the wife.

It's a single core amd 4000+ two 80gb 7200 rpm hard drives, one with the os install and the other dedicated to minecraft. 8600gt video card with 512 megs ram. 4gb ddr400 windows 7 with latest java (8) and video card drivers.

I fire up minecraft and it is very laggy, i used optifine and it will hold at 30 fps if i dont move, but when i start to move i get stuttering and second or two long freezes.

I am guessing my cpu isn't good enough? I was considering upgrading the cpu to a dual core 4200+ but wanted to see what you guys think first.

is there something i could check or test to see if i am having an issue with my settings? would a dual core 4200+ be good or do i need something like a 4800+? thanks for your time!

I don't know about you, but I have one computer that runs Windows XP and I am able to run minecraft 1.7 and minecraft 1.8 on it just fine, granted there are a few times that it will be super laggy but I just think it is the servers that I play on. I also have minecraft running on Windows Vista and that is the computer I run mods on, Optifine mostly. I know that there is one gb of ram in the XP computer ( it has to have a ram upgrade) and there is 3 gb in the Vista.

RAM & your operating system won't determine how well Minecraft runs, it's usually based on CPU and GPU performances.



Top recommendation is to make a new build, as a dinosaur like this won't be able to run much gaming wise.
