I wanted to go onto my old server which was at 1.7.9 and every time I try to open it. it crashes. I wont even open a single player world, this crashes as well.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

This can happen if the game folder you are using has an options.txt file that has a high render distance setting stored in it (from using 1.8 in the same game folder). The older minecraft doesn't validate that the render distance is a supported value before trying to use it (apparently).

Or did a similar error happen when you were creating a single-player world?
Because if it is the former, I'm not sure how to fix this. Never happened to me.
