i dont start with one first of all, thats weird. silly PC version not giving you a map why dey do that
and if i give myself one with a command in the console, it has nothing on it, even if i move around the world, nothing shows up on my map. do i literally have to make one with a compass for it to work? i cant just type "give map" to myself?
You are not supposed to start with a map on PC. That is a console only thing that was never in PC. And if you want a functioning map, give yourself an empty_map and right click with it. You will then have a map.

thats weird. moment i gave myself a map today it worked fine. was getting trolled hard last night i guess..i had maps on maps and none of them would show me anything even if i right clicked.
do i not get a world map to start with? and even if i give myself a map, it doesnt show anything on it? how am i supposed to find my way around lol?
