Right click won't place blocks even though it's chosen under options as the default. Any suggestions?

Can anyone offer suggestions to this problem. At one point, we were able to place blocks with no problem. Now whenever we try to place blocks it doesn't work. Please help! My daughter is distraught over this...sigh
