I have 64 bit the right version and everything and still get the error.
in the game output i get this:
Invalid maximum heap size: -Xmx4G
The specified size exceeds the maximum representable size.
any clue on that one?:/
In the control panel is the Java settings applet.
Under the Java -> Settings tab you will find a listing for each version of java installed.
You only need 1 version, uninstall all the others.
Forcing MC to use a specific amount of memory can cause problems, use the full set of options
to give MC more flexibility
In you case I would suggest you use -Xmx3g -Xms256m -Xmn128M
just ran the java test said my java was out of date, installing the newest version. will tell if it works thanks
The auto updater tends to remove any 64bit Java installed and leave only 32bit installed. It's annoying that way, because you have to manually keep 64bit java up to date.

This error only happens with 32bit Java so you are mistaken.
edit: or at least you aren't using 64bit Java. You can see the path to the Java being used in the Launcher profile that you are trying to use.
Delete any other text in the box and just write this:
-Xmx3.5G
worked for me!
Don't do that, they work best when used together.
just because using only 1 arguments works for you, doesn't mean it'll work for everyone.
The best results will be seen when they are used as intended and using all 3 memory settings allows
Minecraft to use only what it needs, instead forcing it to keep unneeded memory in use.

You might have 32 bit Java or something still installed... double check that the launcher is actually using the 64 bit version of Java.
But regardless, it's not worth trying to give the JVM this much RAM. Just stick with 1-2GB and you shouldn't have a problem.
I believe in the Invisible Pink Unicorn, bless her Invisible Pinkness.
