I'm playing a local survival world in 1.8.1 and I'm experiencing some issues with mob spawning behavior. First, I built a mob spawner. Nothing fancy, just the basic 24 block tall 4 water channel design that's been done a million times. The spawner is built on a platform at a Y of 200, with the spawning pads 24 blocks above that at Y 224. The ground below my spawner is at a Y of 70, so the actual pads are 154 blocks above ground. Well outside of the 144 block radius for other mobs to spawn in. The top of the spawner is sufficiently lit to prevent spawning there. There is no light inside, and the spawning pads are whole cobblestone blocks and not slabs. Despite all this, the spawner is barely working. When I stand at its base so I am within the 32 block radius for mobs to start spawning they just don't. The highest entity count I've managed to get is 4. I've made the exact same spawner on other 1.8.1 survival worlds and they produce an almost constant stream of mobs. The only thing I did differently this time was construct it partially out of planks and partially out of cobblestone since that's what I had available. In the past I've made them entirely out of planks, but I don't see why that should matter.
my second issue has to do with villagers. I have a villager breeder set up with 36 doors. That should cap the limit at 10 which is perfect since that's what I need for my iron farm. I had 9 villagers in my farm, a
nd 1 that somehow spawned outside my farm enclosure as well as an iron golem. I killed the escapee and the golem with the thought that another villager would be spawned, this time inside the enclosure. After about an hour I went back to check and all my villagers had despawned.
sorry to be long winded. Any ideas, mainly about the spawner. I restarted my farm and backed up my save just in case.
thanks.
