I feel like I'm not the only one having this problem, but I couldn't find a thread on my specific issue--If there is one, I apologize.
I've been playing Minecraft for a while on a fairly solid Laptop (Intel i5, 2.50 Ghz, 8gbs RAM, Windows 7 64bit) but I've always wondered why it runs so incredibly slow (tried all of the 'speed up guides' and nothing helped). By accident, I noticed earlier today that my Laptop has been switching to my slow intel GPU (HD Graphics 4000) instead of using my NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660M. Unfortunately, if I force it to use my NVIDA (via its System Tools), my Minecraft Launcher won't even start. No error message, nothing.
Since there are videos on Youtube of people running the game on my card smoothly, there must be a conflict somewhere between the game, my graphics card and my Intel i5. (I have a Lenovo Y580)
Does anyone have any ideas?
(all drivers are up-to-date, I have reinstalled game and Java).
Wow, if you know how many hours I have spent trying to fix my computer... I have had problems launching applications using my Nvidia GPU for some time, but I can finally ensure with this fix that it is not my graphics card that is broken!! Thanks so much for this solution!
Now, only need to figure why my other games won't use the Nvidia card... Starcraft 2 for instance.
By the way, I have this problem with the same laptop (Lenovo Y580) and same config ( intel HD Graphics 4000 / Nvidia GeForce gtx 660m)

This has worked for me! Thanks a million! Not much out there on Google, this solution has to be made seen!
