Yesterday my PC did the automatic update for Java and now Minecraft just quits after selecting a world. Also the Direwolf20 does the same thing. Is it the Java update causing this?
Thanks for any help.

Did you download it (the new launcher) or not? It doesn't get on your computer automatically.
More likely is that the auto update of Java deleted the version of Java your game profile is pointing at and you need to update the path to Java (or install another version Java manually).
*** Java auto update tends to uninstall 64bit Java and leaves you with only 32bit Java installed.
If you have a 64bit OS, and you had previously installed 64bit Java (as you should for a 64bit OS), then there is the chance that it is no longer installed due to the auto update.
