I just updated my java to version 8 and its not letting me play any version of minecraft,
I am running windows 8.1 on a core i5 2430M @ 2.40ghz 6gb of ram with a amd radeon HD 6470M Graphics.
My launcher is 1.5.3.

You may have a Radeon, but your video driver isn't running the new Java on it and the Intel video driver is crashing.
If you configure your video driver to run the Java 8 versions of java.exe and javaw.ext on the Radeon this problem may go away (and you'll get the performance boost as well)
