Tried to mod my sons game for him. Copied all the files from the mod download to the 1.8.1.mod.jar folder. But i'm getting:

"Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM warning: Using incremental CMS is deprecated and will likely be removed in a future release"



I did the new profile with it pulling up 1.8.1mod but don't know what else to do. Regular game works, just not the mod... Did I do something wrong

transferring the mod files to the .jar folder? any help would be greatly appreciated....I really want to understand this so I can do more for him in the future....Thanks!

I could be wrong but it sounds like you are going about mod installation all wrong. Unless its changed the mods go into the mod folder but before you even do that you need to get the minecraft forge installer for the version of minecraft the mods are for. Also make sure all the mods are on the same version too. Dont want to try and use a 1.7 mod on 1.8, vice versa, etc.

As for installing it, its fairly simple. Its an executable jar file last I used it so its mostly automated. Once you have it installed and the mods installed you need to either use the forge profile or have a custom profile using it. You can find tutorials for most of this on youtube unless another member here would be kind enough to go further into the details.

I just went to get Forge.... I know I have 1.8.1 minecraft... But are there different versions of 1.8.1? How do I know which to d'l ? 11.14.0.1265 1262 1261?

I am not sure about 1.8.1 since all I see is 11.14.0.1265 for 1.8. I dont know if it will still work. My experience with forge is a bit dated as I use 1.6.4 heavily for mods still as it has the most mods for that version from what ive seen. I have a few under 1.7.2/1,7,10 but not many so I cant be much help for 1.8, sorry. Hopefully someone else can provide better insight.

There is no forge for 1.8.1, only very early testing beta of forge for 1.8 with very few mods out.

If you want to mod, you stick with 1.7.10 and get forge for the same version.

You can have multiple versions set up at once since you're apparently confused by the launcher capabilities. On the launcher, in bottom left corner hit New Profile button and on the window that pops, choose for release 1.7.10. Hit save profile. Select for it on the launcher and hit play. Then quit the game and shut down launcher. Now install forge for 1.7.10. Start up the launcher again. Hit edit profile and for version now choose "release 1.7.10-Forge xx.xx.x.xxxx" where Xs are some numbers. Hit save again, choose it on the launcher and hit play. When it starts quit again. Now go and download 1.7.10 versions of the mods you want, dump them in the mods folder that's been created in your minecraft folder. Start up your game again and providing you did everything ok, it should work.

Stupid Question ....I downloaded Forge, but what is it for?

I am very bad at explaining what forge does but think of it as a master mod that allows all other mods to function together. Without it, it's very difficult to run more than one mod at a time and setups like you see today with 100+ mods are impossible without it.

ahh i see..... Well I went thru and got everything downloaded..Forge, the AVP mod my kid wants...followed all the instructions and the mod seemed to install like it should. Started minecraft and the "Forge" profile was already selected...so I hit play or load to start the game and it seems like it just exits and nothing happens....any ideas on this one?? lol I really appreciate everyone being so helpful...I'm usually pretty good at learning things like this quickly but this seems to be repeatedly kickin my butt...
I just realized something....all the stuff I just went thru for that mod install was probably done on the latest version of minecraft 1.8.1 right? I had loaded up 1.7.10 a couple times before i tried the mod....Did I screw up?

That forge profile you have, when you hit Edit Profile, which version of the game is it selected to use? Is use snapshots checked as well (it should be unchecked)?

Yeah that's pretty old and it's not going to work with the latest java. You need 1230 minimum and that's the recommended one. Download it off of here:

and then install it (while MC and launcher are off), and after installing it, start the launcher, hit Edit Profile again and for the version chose the release 1.7.10-Forge10.13.2.1230 and hit save profile, then hit play.

Ok i'm doing that now....I saved the zip file and i'm extracting it now... is there a launcher to install it ? or do i just need to extract it ?

actually i think I have 1230 installed now....Just wondering if i need to reinstall the mod again? seems like when i start MC it still loads up the 1.8.1 regardless of what profile i select

Make sure you downloaded from the link that said installer. So that when you click on it, the window pops and you see it installing.

Once you're done, and I can't stress this enough, make sure both minecraft and the launcher are shut down while you're installing forge, open up the MC launcher, select your forge profile, hit Edit Profile and manually select version "release 1.7.10-Forge10.13.2.1230" and then hit save profile. Then back to launcher, re-select your forge profile and hit play. Do not skip any of these steps.

it keeps installing forge 1158 whenever i try to run the avp mod. I have 1230 installed but when i try to load up 1158 it just closes...when i load up 1230 i get this...
