Hi everyone, thanks in advance for any help you can give
The Problem:
Minecraft worked fine until we started playing multiplayer on external servers for the first time. Now whenever we play, regardless of multiplayer or single player, at some point the whole computer screen will enter & stay in power save mode (go black/blank). We can still hear minecraft music and sound effects, so the computer is still running. We can't get out of this mode by pressing buttons, or the mouse, or control+alt+delete. The only thing we can do is force the computer to turn off by manually holding the power button down.
It has also crashed when minecraft was open but not in play mode (when it has an option on the screen 'back to game') and I was doing other stuff on the computer - like, googling for a solve.
We have not made any modifications to MC, it's what I think you call Vanilla MC? We're pretty new to MC PC after previously using MC PE.
It is definitely MC that is crashing it, as this power save mode does not happen when I am playing other games or using other software.
What I've already tried:
reinstalled minecraft
reinstalled java
lowered the minecraft frame rate & block rate
googled the problem and found no clear answer
Loaded different MC version profiles (1:7:2, 1:7:4, 1:7:10, 1.8.1)
Different multiplayer servers
Played just single player on personal pc
Tried to update video card drivers but couldn't find an update available
None of this has helped stop the crash.
In addition to the above major problem, very occasionally MC itself crashes without affecting the rest of the computer. We have noted the below error codes:
Internal Exception: java.io.IOException. An established connection was aborted by the software of your host.
I don't know if it's helpful, but the minecraft servers we've connected to are:
Creation Bay
EDAW G878 (I think this or Creation Bay was the first in which we noticed the problem)
Famcraft
Cubeville
Towncraft
The Sandlot
Crash log: Unfortunately I can't get a crash log, even running MC with the launcher still open, because the whole screen turns off not just the game window - and the only way to use the computer is to restart it from scratch.
Java version : Is the latest, have reinstalled this after having problems, 1.8.0.25. When I looked at this via command prompt it said something about 'Client VM' which I don't know what means.
Thanks again for any help you can give. I have an upset 9 year old who is getting very frustrated with MC as a result of this.

Moderatorwhy are you running a modern pc with windows vista?just looked up it comes with vista, but has an upgrade option, didn't expect that.have you checked power settings to make sure its not something there?
also have a look in the .minecraft folder for the crash logs (maybe in the logs folder)
