So.. First of all, this apparently should be working according to this very forum's instructions.. But with eight gigs of RAM on my computer and JVM Arguments -Xms6G -Xmx6G, I encounter an "Initial heap size set to a larger value than the maximum heap size" error. What could be causing this and how can I fix it? I also tried -Xms5G -Xmx6G and got the same issue. This really bothers me because I have 64Bit Java too. I can't think of anything that would be causing this.. Should I just try using megabyte sizes instead or something?
Edit: I even tried just typing -Xmx8G at one point and it didn't work.
Also, I thought this might be relevant.. On the rare occasion that I do get the JVM Arguments to work, the debug screen (A.K.A F3 screen) still shows that I only have two gigs. What does this mean?
Edit: Thought this might also be relevant. Underneath "Error occurred during initialization of VM, Initial heap size set to a larger value than the maximum heap size," it also says "Picked up _JAVA_OPTIONS: -Xmx3072M". Does any of this help at all?
Edit: I tried one more thing.. -Xms1G and -Xmx8G finally allowed it to launch. But I'd like to be able to allocate more memory than this.. So still, what can I do to allocate more memory without this error occurring?
The easiest solution is just drop your java arguments in the launcher. 3G is plenty even if you have a ton of mods. From the info given, it sounds like it should run then. You can affirm in F3 how much is allocated and how much is being used.

Plenty of people have told me that what I have is enough.. But Minecraft still lags quite a lot. If three gigs is enough, why is lag still an issue I have? Memory is my only explanation with everything else. I have an AMD Radeon HD 6700 video card and Quad-core processor @2.2Ghz. I even got a new monitor recently because I thought that might be an issue with no other explanation.
It's your processor speed. 2.6 is minimum and 2.8 GHz is recommended. I don't know much about overclocking nor recommend. It could cause overheating and permanent damage.
like one of those "game optimizing" programs (i.e. heard Razer Synapse could do it).
Razer Game Booster. Synapse is just an control panel for Razer Surround and Mouse/Keyboard. Synapse should have no interaction with any game ever given I use it (for deathadder 3.5G and surround).

A processors clock speed does not mean nothing but how fast it can complete clock cycles. It is the raw precision and calculations it can do in those clock cycles that matter, or to say IPS (Instructions Per Second).

Memory allocation is least to improve performance at all. The only time that happens is when the application doesn't have enough, but you will know this with OOM (Out of Memory) errors. Also don't go above 3GiB allocation for client, for the garbage collection system gets a bit lazy and messy.
Follow the instructions in this thread. This at time is chasing a rabbit, of which leads nowhere but circles.
I love this forum software and editor. All hail broken quotes, quotes are alpha, and not the Cave Story quote. Unfortunately I attempted to fix the quotes, but they seem to get worse. How has this not been fixed yet?

Thank you! I would say this is the most helpful reply I've ever gotten. It's really frustrating though.. My computer is used and was only supposed to be $300 or something like that. We ended up paying $400 extra because our client's friend who gave him this computer had **** hardware in it. The ****er could barely run. And $100 of that extra $400 went to this computer's processor alone. Thanks for finally clearing this up. God dammit..
This is an override. Something is overriding global Java settings. Might be Windows, in which case check Windows Environmental Variables menu and delete JAVA_OPTIONS. Might be something else, like one of those "game optimizing" programs (i.e. heard Razer Synapse could do it).
As for CPU, yeah. Generally, due to the way Minecraft is coded (read very badly) it requires a very fast CPU. I'd say more then 3GHz if you're thinking about big modpacks. Number of cores is irrelevant since Minceraft can't use more then 1 CPU core (2 with Optifine, not fully).
Except for Minecraft 1.8+ that finally has built in multithreading ... which isn't very well optimized. And it'll take months for any worthwhile 1.8+ mods to show up.
This was also very helpful. Listening to you is actually what FINALLY fixed my issues. I found the _JAVA_OPTIONS variable and deleted it. I'm running Minecraft with four gigs now. And prior to popular belief, the game is indeed running better. Thank you very much.
