I quit playing Minecraft several years ago due to the infamous "shadow glitch" that was, apparently never addressed. Just reinstalled the game after a long hiatus in hopes that with all these new updates and improvements and new ownership the serious glitch might have been fixed. It is not.
To update the few players who have no clue what I'm talking about: The shadow glitch is when all of a sudden, maybe after a game save or loading up the game after a short break or a crash (I don't know what the cause is), the game's shadows are a lot darker than they should be.
This is not to be confused with the similar glitch where entire walls will be pitch black -- this glitch just causes shadows to be a lot darker than they should.
This time around, I decided I would do some research. Seen lots of questions over the years with no answers other than "this is an engine bug, nothing you can do about it, wait for the patch". That never happened either apparently.
So I decided to create a forum account make my own thread with a few findings of my own that might help the development team in not only being aware that this bug is still around, but knowing a few key factors about this bug:
Shadows are a lot darker than they should be, pretty much everywhere, but more so in some spots than others
The darkness seems to go away, in that spot only, when you get near or touch the area
This bug occurs on non-modded, vanilla installations
Complete uninstalls of the game do not fix this problem
This problem seems to happen to INDIVIDUAL SAVE FILES ONLY. When one save file or "world" has the problem, others may not. Once the save file develops the glitch, it appears unfixable and the save file is ruined.
The shadows being so dark actually affects gameplay in the sense that mobs inside of these shadows can now actually stay alive during the day where as without the glitch they normally would not be able to!
Would be nice to see the developers look back into this major game-killing glitch. It ruins an otherwise perfect game for a lot of us. I'll check back in a couple more years and see if any progress has been made.
