I have Windows 8.1 and Java version 7 now. My problem started with my old XPS Dell. I fell into, what appears to be, a 20x20 hole in my map that appeared right next to my house after the 8.1 Minecraft update. The hole hadn't been there prior. I was slowly floating down towards the glowing blue bottom so I aimed for a nearby cave but I got stuck one block up from the mouth of the cave and nothing I did could get me into the cave. I closed the game and reopened it only to find myself in a blue world with the clouds and sun/moon above. I did not die, I did not get an error message. I was stuck and my screen was jittery as if my character had too much coffee, however I could look around.

Now with my new computer I've done research and read someone floated out of their world hole. I switched from Survival to Creative Mode and tried to fly out. Nothing happened. I closed Minecraft then reloaded it to find I am now inside the cave that I was aiming for initially but still I cannot move in any direction nor jump. I can however destroy blocks, which were 2 blocks from my location.

Is there anything else I can do to get my character to move or is this map no good anymore?

Well the world hole is gone and I found myself at the foot of stairs leading to the surface. Thank goodness. Unfortunately I am still unable to move.

That is most commonly seen in servers, but if you disconnect from the server then reconnect it works (or if the server boots you from the lobby). So it could be a problem with your internal server (when you run Minecraft you are running a server that only you can connect to); I doubt it though. I suggest to downgrade to Java 6. My mac (which runs Yosemite) will refuse to run anything but Java 6 (unless you do a ton of work-arounds that work half the time) and all my Java programs run fine.

I fixed the problem. I risked it by destroying the block underneath me and I was freed.
