Over the past couple of days I've been having a lot of lag whenever I'm on a server (all the players and chat freeze, but I can still move around). My fps and ping are fine, and I tried updating my java but I'm still having this problem. Sometimes I also get an error message like "internal exception" or "badly compressed packet". I'm typically on 1.8 with optifine (which I also tried updating), but I switched to other versions and still had the problem.
I don't think there's any issue on singleplayer, but I haven't tested it enough to be 100% sure.
This all started a couple days ago when my computer did some routine updates, but that might not have anything to do with the problem
Also, today when I try to join a server sometimes I get a message that says "Failed to login: the authentication are currently down for maintenance" but that may not be related to my problem at all.
Does anyone have any idea what might be causing the problem, or what I can try to fix it?

use http://www.speedtest.net/ and http://www.pingtest.net/ to test them
