I have searched, but I am having a hard time understanding how profiles/MC versions work. Previously when installed Forge and switched MC versions my son and I lost all our world progress. He would really prefer that not happen again.

Is there a way to switch from 1.7.10 (forge/modded) to 1.8 (vanilla) without losing your world progress? And then switch back again?

Is it as simple as making a new profile and having one profile be associated with 1.7.10 forge and the new profile be associated with 1.8?

With all the MC mods and stuff there's gotta be a way to do this.

You can make a new profile sure. And switch to 1.8. But it won't be the same world. 1.7 and 1.8 MC are vastly different so there likely would be issues trying to do this, breaking your world in the process. In your case, this is especially so since your 1.7 is modded, and 1.8 has no mods out for it yet.

So create a 1.8 profile and make a test world to try things out.

You can run mods in a different .minecraft location.
