I occasionally enjoy playing minecraft with friends... However I've started experiencing an issue that makes it pretty much unplayable.
When I'm on the surface of the map after a period of time my game seems to crash to a white screen. It appears to be related to the day/night cycles as it tends to do this when it's switch from one to the other... But this could be purely coincidence. If I am underground (completely enclosed by at least 2-3 blocks) I can play for as long as I like. But if I go to the surface, my time is generally limited (and inconsistent) before I have to do a hard restart of my computer.
I'm using Ubuntu 14.04
NVIDIA drivers are 331.38.
Problems persists in both Oracle and Open Java.
System has adequate RAM.
Minecraft logs don't seem to say anything out of the normal and I'm not really sure what to look for in /var/logs (if anything) to try and figure out where to start.
Minecraft is latest version.
This often happens to me when playing WoW but that is through Wine and this isn't... So I'd assume no relation.

It's really unlikely you'd find Minecraft's logs in /var/logs (had me confused when I got it too). In my copy of Ubuntu they seem to be in located in ~/.minecraft/latest-client.log, ~/.minecraft/latest-server.log, ~/.minecraft/crash-reports/, and ~/.minecraft/logs/.

Haha. Yes, I'm aware of that. What I was meaning is that if it's something related to Minecraft or Java is causing someone else to crash (Kernel, Unity, etc) it would be in there, however, I don't know what I'm looking for to diagnose that.
This isn't simply just minecraft crashing. It's causing the entire system to go down.

Alright... The last time I saw a whole system go down during Minecraft was when I hit the fullscreen button on a Mac. Apparently Minecraft then sent a message to the video card it couldn't understand, and everything went downhill from there. That the same thing happens with Wine kinda says that yes, this is what's going on. You may have the latest video card drivers, but are you sure they're the correct ones? I've had no end of problems with the 3rd party ATI Linux drivers. Even though you're on NVIDIA (which apparently is much better) it might be worth a shot to uninstall the 3rd party ones and let the system grab the open source defaults for you. It really depends: How much do you want to play Minecraft?
So I've gone from the Trusty suggested drivers to the latest 343.22 and nothing has changed. Something else is causing the crash.

NVIDIA drivers are proprietary, the actual ones provided by NVIDIA. The other opensource version provides me with more problems than solutions on just everyday use. Hardly an option.
I also use Ubuntu and something similar happens to me. This occurs randomly, but if I look at a certain thing the screen is filled with different colors ranging from green to red to white, usually all three and a few more. I still haven't found out whats wrong though :(. I feel your pain. However one thing i found out is that if i look away and back it stops and starts, maybe something we are looking at? Sorry i couldn't be more helpful.
