First off, i'm not very computer savvy. I purchased minecraft recently from minecraft.net. It went through the installation steps smoothy. However, it never asked for an installation location. All it did was add a minecraft exe to the download folder. No program files anywhere. Trying to add resource packs, but there's nowhere for them to go. I'm having trouble figuring out why there would be no program files on the hdd anywhere, but the game plays fine. Any help would be appreciated.
Minecraft installs to a different place depending on your operating system.
There's an easy way to get to these files regardless of what you're using: start the launcher, press Edit Profile, then Open Game Dir. A window will open in your Minecraft folder.
If you want to add resource packs, simply create a folder called resourcepacks and put the ZIP file in there. Then you can select that resource pack by going to Options > Resource Packs, selecting it so it moves to the right, then clicking 'Done'.
Minecraft doesn't install like other programs, it just downloads the required files and puts them in the appdata folder
c:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\.minecraft
If you are finding that the 'resourcepacks' folder is missing (this is a known bug) the easy fix is just make a new folder with that name and put your resource pack into it
c:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\.minecraft\resourcepacks
