I am making a puzzle map with a modified 1.2.5 minecraft launcher. I changed to unmodified 1.8 to play a map, but when I changed back, part of my map was missing:
The reason for posting in the unmodified section, is because I tried with 1.8 (unmodified), but it's still missing. So it can't be a mod that screws up. I have a backup, but I'll lose some of my progress if I choose to go down that road.
Mostlikly the area was generated with modded data and when you loaded it in unmodded later version the game just didn't know what the modded bits were so just removed them.
You should never open a modded map with unmodded minecraft, things will break
