I had trouble playing Minecraft today, here was the series of events to the best of my memory:
1: Couldn't connect to my Realms server, error message said something about wrong version. I do remember seeing the launcher "downloading 1.8.jar" which I thought was odd, nothing else out of the ordinary.
2: Since I couldn't connect to Realms at all and got the weird message about wrong version, I deleted .minecraft and uninstalled Java.
3: Reinstalled Java v7u67 (x64), then went to try to install Minecraft again (from a newly downloaded Minecraft.exe) and when the launcher starts I get this:
Bootstrap (v5)
Current time is Oct 11, 2014 8:31:56 PM
System.getProperty('os.name') == 'Windows 7'
System.getProperty('os.version') == '6.1'
System.getProperty('os.arch') == 'amd64'
System.getProperty('java.version') == '1.7.0_67'
System.getProperty('java.vendor') == 'Oracle Corporation'
System.getProperty('sun.arch.data.model') == '64'
I've been researching this issue for the last 4 hours, and so far I have:
1: Verified internet connection - I'm typing on the affected PC. (Minecraft does work on my laptop, btw)
2: Cleared Java temp files, and reinstalled it several times
3: Verified there is nothing mentioning Minecraft in "hosts" file
4: Verified nothing is blocking java.exe, javaw.exe, or Minecraft.exe in my firewall (in fact all of these are trusted applications)
5: Even approved them in Windows Firewall, even though it's off
6: Verified I don't have any proxy settings enabled, either in Windows or any 3rd party browser
7: I have tried downloading the file directly from https://s3.amazonaws.com/Minecraft.Download/launcher/launcher.pack.lzma, and I am able to do this. Oddly if I paste this into .minecraft/ I can get the launcher started, but then it never loads up completely (Play button and everything else is greyed out, and the download progress bar is stuck at like 1% like it's trying to download something).
Update:
I tried downloading launcher.pack.lzma directly and copied it into .minecraft. From there the launcher progressed, and got stuck on downloading "Versions", so I copied the contents of the Versions folder from my laptop and ran it again.
Finally Minecraft has launched, and is starting the actual program now. Although it's very slow and sluggish.
Now when I try to connect to my Realms server, I get this error:
Failed to connect to the server
java.net.ConnectException: Connection timed out: no further information:
You're right I should have mentioned it: I did reboot several times throughout this process.
I did try copying all the files from my laptop, still getting the error when connecting to Realms:
Failed to connect to the server
java.net.ConnectException: Connection timed out: no further information:
Based on suggestions in another thread, I also made sure there were rules allowing all connections for port 25565 on TCP and UDP - there already was, and I put them in Windows firewall too even though it's off and I use a 3rd party firewall. I also made sure the firewall was off on my router.
Ok update: It randomly works now today. I'll close this thread tomorrow if it's still working the rest of the day with no issues, but I guess my computer just didn't want me playing Minecraft yesterday.

Alternatively, copy all the files from your laptop to the affected PC.
I noticed you did not say you rebooted; try that if you haven't.
Let's do some math.
1/3 = 0.333...
1/3 * 3 = 1
0.333... * 3 = 0.999...
1 = 0.999...
1 - 0.999... = 0.999... - 0.999...
0.0...1 = 0
0.0...1 * 10... = 0 * 10...
1 = 0
