I am probably gonna make myself look like an idiot.
I am running 1.8 with 5gb out of 8gb dedicated to it. I have fancy video settings with max lighting, 12 as a render distance, vbo on, vsync off, mimap 4, alternate blocks on, view bobbing, and clouds off.
I can be a several chunks away from my base and get about 28-35 and 31chunk updates, but when I look towards or occupy my small base my chunk updates hops up into the hundreds while my frame rate remains around 25-28 and my game gets very choppy while I walk.
I never had this issue before 1.8. I turned all video settings to the lowest and I still get the issue.
I am playing single player.
My cpu and ram statistics are not maxed out while I play.
2.3ghz dual core i5
8gb ram
sadly 512mb video
