I'm at a loss. I've followed lots of great advise here on how to unlag ( by shutting off, reducing settings etc) but it's still unplayable stop motion lag, seems worse overland than it does deep mining. and all this occured after the 1.8 update. I was playing it regularly untill then. java, etc is all current updates. Anyone have more suggestions, or help ideas? I'm on serious Minecraft deprivation here.
If 1.8 is that bad you can play older versions by editing your profile in the launcher and selecting whichever version you want from the "use version" drop-down list; this is what I do (you can even play very old Alpha/Beta versions if you want by checking the boxes).
This worked!!!! It plays 1.7 just like it used too... Only exception IS: it nerfed absolutely ALL chest contents in ALL my created worlds/lands etc. No matter which one I go into now, in any version everything that was stocked in positivly every single box is GONE, empty, nothing there, including everything I was wearing and my inventory. Everything I created or built etc is just as it was... but all boxes everywhere are empty. I had tons and tons of materials not to mention special finds and treasures that I can't just go back to that spot and retreive. Sigh... at least all I'd built isn't gone.
When you bring any Minecraft world into a major version previous to the one it was generated in you're going to have problems such as that. 1.8 is no exception to that, and it's been stated multiple times that 1.8 is in fact not compatible with 1.7.x or prior.
Aside from that, poor performance can be caused by low-end hardware, such as a low-end GPU or CPU. Upgrading your hardware will help with performance all around.

I probably should have mentioned that, although if you don't mind you can open to LAN and enable cheats (note this is only for the current session; you'll want to quit in any case since you can't pause the game when opened to LAN) to give yourself your items back; a more controlled way is to take a screenshot of your inventory/chest contents while still in 1.8 and use those to replace your items in 1.7.
Also, note that this only affects chunks that were loaded in 1.8, so any older worlds will be unaffected in areas you haven't been to in 1.8 as the game doesn't convert entire worlds at once.
(it is also a good idea to always have backups of your worlds since they can be corrupted or lost for many other reasons)
TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?

Fixed it like a treat!
