Since 1.8 I have been having terrible lag issues - I play on a laptop, I won't bore you with the specs, suffice to say it has always handled Minecraft lag-free. I tried dialing everything back to bare bones, 2 chunk render, allocating more memory, basically every handle I could possibly jiggle was jiggled twice.
Finally, I set fullscreen on. This did the trick, no lag. Then, I tried inching up the settings. I played on fancy, pushed the render distance out, put the clouds back in, and everything is fine.
Will this solve your issues? Who knows. I know it got me playing again, so I figured I'd share.
