I have a problem getting MC1,8 to run on my grand children's computer. The computer is running Windows XP and originally had Minecraft 1.5.2 which was working well. My grandson had his mate add Forge and then he downloaded and added a mod. I do not know which one, but something went wrong and the game crashed and could not be restarted.
My daughter brought the computer to me and I removed Minecraft from Roaming, then did a search for MC files on the Computer and C drive, I deleted these and all files from the desk top and recycle bin, Then I downloaded MC 1.8. The installation went okay, but when I run the game it gets to the main menu and then stops responding.
It's possible that the computer is too old to run 1.8. There is a known software change between 1.7.2 and 1.7.4 where computers with Intel Series 4 chipsets cannot cross. I would edit your launcher profile and select version 1.7.2 and see if that works.
Otherwise if you still need assistance, then providing a dxdiag log and / or any logs from the launcher tabs would be needed so that there is some indication of what the problem might be.
I had to select 1.6.4 to get the game to run. My grand children would like me to try to add some mods. would I be right in saying that I need to fine ones compatible with 1.6.4 even though it is 1.8 that is installed.
I have come to the conclusion that the computer and the graphic card are too old to run anything higher than 1.6.4. 1.7.2 does work but with extreme lag. My daughter had decided to purchase a new computer and to have me install Minecraft 1.8 on it when she visits at Christmas.
I also need to know if there is a version of Forge for MC 1.8. I have seen Videos on the internet claiming there are but I am reluctant to download the ones suggested in the description until I have confirmation that they are legitimate.

I'm not aware of anything that would let you play 1.6.4 but not 1.7.2.....
