I'm new to the minecraft world. I tried downloading it to my mac and though the .dmg dl from the minecraft site just fine, I can't get it to download the game.

This is what it tells me. I've tried to redownload and it hasn't worked. I'm living in China for the next 3 months and so, I'm not sure if this is an issue with the VPN, but I have one. Not sure if you can help me with this, but I'm also not sure where else to look.
My first thought might be the great firewall, but ?
If the link works for you in a browser, then the issue is something specific to Java, and could be something like an on board firewall that is configured to block most programs from connecting to the internet. In which case you'd need to add a rule for minecraft.exe (and probably java.exe).
If the link does not work for you, then it is more general. Until you can get that link in a browser you can stop trying to run minecraft and just focus on fixing the https connection to s3 via your browser.

Thanks so much for your consideration and time,

What happens if you click on the link manually? https://s3.amazonaws.com/Minecraft.Download/launcher/launcher.pack.lzma
