Soooo.... Got a new laptop recently. Lucky me, anyways, the timing was perfect for the 1.8 release, meaning... brand new download of 1.8 on a brand new macnine. Got her up and running... started a new world seed in vanilla single player yesterday, and this thing is running fantastic! plus 60 fps most of the time straight out of the box. Day 2 (real time) in my new world and i am already enchanting at level 30 and brewing potions! Why am I telling u this?? To stress the point that minecraft is workin fine. Now to my question... With all this newness going on, I decided i would give a texture pack a try, I mean why not. Nothing to grand... the old "faithful 32" pack would be fine enough for me. Went to load the pack, and guess what... no resourcepack folder?!? I have conveniently attached a couple of desktop snapshots to prove it. One pic of the error message minecraft gives me, and the other of my acual ".minecraft" folder showing that there is indeed NO folder in there. What??? Am i supposed to create that folder myself??? Was i wrong in making the assumption that it should have already been there? Is it safe for me to go poking around in there and make one? And what about those texture files just hanging out with no folder?? (see second picture) do those go inside it if I make a folder? Did my junk download wrong??? As I have gone to great length to illustrate... The game works perfectly fine.... but I am not loading any texture packs anytime soon. Anyone have any input on this?
Man, that did the trick! It totally worked! My texture pack is running like a champ! Of course I have an opinion on this, But first an explanation of the fix incase people are coming to this thread for the answer. If minecraft is telling you there is no resource pack folder, simply save and quit the game, then reopen the launcher, go to "Edit profile" directly on the launcher and choose to open minecraft in a prior version... 1.7.10 should be fine (the last version before 1.8). Start minecraft again, then load up your texture pack... the folder should show up now which makes the whole operation possible. After loading the pack, save and exit once more, go back to the launcher again... edit profile again, and choose open minecraft with the latest version. Viola!! the folder is there now and everything works as it should. Opinion time...
I am now aware that this has been officially reported as a bug.. however, now that I better understand what is happening, I don't really view this issue as a bug. Minecraft is a game built up on itself version by version... and it gives us that very option.. play whichever version we wish to play in the launcher. So you are starting out fresh, (newbie), or starting on a new machine... download the launcher... get the latest version. Now 1.8 is all about the streamlining of things. (Keep It Simple) And furthermore resource packs are optional per player. Conclusion: RESOURCE PACK = EXTRA OPTIONAL FUNCTIONALITY = REDUNDANT = GO FETCH IT IF YOU WANT IT. Nothing is broken "or buggy" in reality. I don't think this should actually be a bug.. Its more people being like, "man, I don't want to have to go through all that archiving of versions just to load up a pack for the first time". And to that I say... get up and go brush your teeth... anything worth doing takes a bit of effort. So glad I resolved this issue myself through a bit of research... I only wish I had found my answer before posing the question. But perhaps this post may help out someone else. Happy Crafting! And FYI The hi-def texture pack rocks!
