I upgraded to 1.8 and since I did monsters are not spawning at night. I have checked my difficulty it is set on normal. I went outside for two entire nights and did not encounter anything other than chickens and pigs. I even set the difficulty at hard and went out before changing it back. Still no monsters.
Well it is 1.8 so i would imagine that it would be a bug on mojangs side i wouldn't worry about it to much just try starting a new world or change versions. i will test this and see as well.
I have the same problem after updating my 1.7.4 vanilla world to 1.8. Nothing is spawning at night. I'm just hoping they figure it out because I have put a lot of time into this world.
My first thought was the render distance bug, but you mentioned in your other thread that you tried increasing the render distance with no effect. Have you tried entering the command /gamerule doMobSpawning (open to LAN and enable cheats if necessary; be sure to capitalize "doMobSpawning" as I wrote it)? If it says it is false then reenter the command with "true" added to the end (/gamerule doMobSpawning true); I say to enter it first without "true" because I'd like to know what it says. It is possible that something in the conversion to 1.8 caused it to be set to "false"; this is also likely to be the issue if a new world spawns mobs as normal (to speed things up make it in Creative and do /time set night).
Also, you can press F3 and see how many entities there are (the number after "E:" on the fourth line, 1/59 as shown here), which should be around x/100, depending on the number of animals; switching between Peaceful and Easy-Hard (note that difficulty has no effect on hostile mob spawn rates) should increase the count by around 80, especially at night.
Otherwise, and if a new world created in 1.8 spawns mobs normally, I can only assume there is a weird bug in the game affecting existing worlds.
I tried your command /gamerule doMobSpawning and it just said "you do not have permission to use this command." I don't get it. It's a single player world that's not connected to anything else and I'm the only player. how do I not have permission? How might I go about getting permission?
I looked up how to fix the permissions and I turned the cheats on. I followed your instructions and now the mobs are spawning again ^_^. Thank you so much. I was beginning to think I was going to have to abandon my world but you saved me the heartache.
The same problem is happening to me. I have used the command(it was already true) and used the command with true at the end but it still didnt work. I suggest waiting until 1.8.1 because I know I dont miss those zombies
To turn cheats on for the game in a non cheat mode, press escape, click open to lan, turn the cheats option to on and the gamemode there doesn't matter unless other people are playing with you. Once you do that cheats should be on. In chat type this exactly, case sensative, "/gamerule doMobSpawning". Tell us what it says. If it says false, type this exactly, case sensative, "/gamerule doMobSpawning true". That should fix your issue

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
Sorry for the Necro - Post but i have never been so happy to get shot by a skeleton at night after typing "/gamerule doMobSpawning true"
