I built an adventure map a while ago and there's a certain stage in the game that is very redstone heavy -lots of circuitry and clocks and command blocks, but there is also swarms of mobs (lots of monster spawners). In the past I had issues with lag, i uploaded the map to a server and at that stage i usually got about 10fps. I tried the map again today, offline for the first time on 1.8 and when i got to that stage i was consistently getting 0fps, the game pretty much just stopped, my screen would move slightly every 10 or 20 seconds. I noticed however that as soon as i pressed esc and my menu came up the game went back to a normal framerate. The lag is so bad that I can not escape that area, to calm the lag, i can't even eat rotten flesh to kill myself to respawn somewhere else. Pretty much the only thing i can do right now is use mcedit to relocate my player, or edit the world to allow cheats so i can switch to spectator mode. Other than that, does anyone have any idea why I am getting lag this bad?

Then its just your computer sadly. Try setting render distance to tiny, or turning the settings down if you have not already. or check if you have anything else in the background thats taking up a lot of CPU.
That is what is confusing me. This is the same computer i used the first time when it was running at 10fps, I have nothing else running and all my settings are at a minimum, the only difference is the first time it was online, the second time it was offline. I would have expected the results to be worse when online
Tried that too, no difference. What intrigued me though is that when i opened my options menu (esc) in the background the game returned to normal speed. So this tells me that whatever is the cause of this lag must be a process that does not function when your options menu is open

is the map made in 1.8? if so its just minecraft 1.8 update, every one is freaking out about minecraft lagging 1.8 when they would get 60 frames in 1.7, so I think its just 1.8 if your using 1.8 that is.

Yeah i am running it on 1.8, however the world was made in 1.6 i think. I think that's definitely a possibility, although last time it worked properly it was on a 1.8 snapshot...

I already allocated more memory, it is set to 4GB which is 4x the default
