Can't craft fences??

I am not sure why, but I can't seem to craft a fence. I can get the fence gate to craft, but the actual fence itself won't come up in the craft table.

Just to make sure I'm doing it right:

x= empty /=stick

x x x

/ / /

/ / /

Can anyone help? Is it something with the 1.8 update? Thanks.
