I've just bought Minecraft and can't play it in Survival mode because I'm unable to get blocks of wood from trees (despite much punching) or to dig holes or mine stone. Oddly, I can smash grass and pick flowers. In Creative mode I can mine and chop wood, but I can't find any way to do crafting. Is it not enabled for this mode?
