getting severe lag in 1.8. Some have linked it to water and I can confirm that it is less laggy away from water, but when I'm near water, it is really choppy and my FPS drops to 1-5. it's simply unplayable as it is. My son's PC is a P4 and a few years older than mine and plays fine so it's not because I have an old laptop. I've tried removing minecraft and java and reinstalling. I've tried different video settings within minecraft. My video drivers are fine. Nothing seems to fix it.

The memory that the JVM is using is also half a gig. If you increase that to 2 gig your chink load times will go down and increase the speed at which the JVM will run.

Minecraft 1.8 has been pretty unplayable due to a change in the lighting engine and the water engine or something like that. Besides, I don't really want to update to it because of the stupid changes (E.G. the Endermites and Bunnies that need a facelift).

So i updated to java 64bit from 32 bit. This actually helped the lag and bumped me from 1-2 FPS to around 8-10FPS which is at least somewhat playable. It is still pretty bad though.
As far as allocating memory to minecraft, not sure how to do that, but if I'm not using the max amount as you can see in the pic, why would allocating more help?

Does not hurt, and is relative simple for default launcher by check marking a box. The parameter arguments there should be there by default now.

When the JVM (what Minecraft runs on) goes to load a piece of data, it saves the numbers in RAM. It then takes those numbers and calulates them with the CPU. You can think of it as a neighborhood. When neighbor A(Minecraft) wants to bake a gigantic cake(load a chunk) they need the tools to make it. So they ask neighbor B(the RAM) for a bowl. In your instance, neighbor B is saying that they only have a small bowl, when in fact they have a huge bowl! Anyway, neighbor A(Minecraft) accepts the tiny bowl, not knowing there is a bigger bowl, and continues to try their best to make the gigantic cake. It is taking a really long time to make the cake(load aa chunk) because they are working out of a tiny bowl. When you allocate more RAM, you are letting neighbor B give neighbor A a larger bowl to make that gigantic cake faster.
With the setup you have, you should be able to run Minecraft fairly easy, including 1.8. I would recommend increasing it to 4GB of RAM. That would make it so everything can run smoothly. Remeber that every time you are done with your laptop, shut it down. Every computer always runs better after a good sleep.
Edit: And the Java version(32 or 64 bit) depends on the CPU type, which in your instance is 64 bit, and the OS version, which you said was 64-bit. I recommend using the 64-bit Java because it makes it so that you can pass through more traffic.

You should see my laptop, I always put it in Hibernate mode whenever I'm done with using it for the day, and it's really laggy, and now it's just pure broken due to some virus or something..

I get that, but if I'm not getting near the max, it shouldn't matter no? Also, how do you change memory allocation for minecraft? I didn't see where the other guy said to do it.

It should be in the Edit Profile button on the lower left hand side of the launcher. At the bottom of the dialogue box that opens.
I believe Minecraft is trying to leave room for other uses of the RAM. This has been the case in my previous experiments with it.
Even though this has fixed almost all my issues with Minecraft, I still cannot guarantee that it will work. Sometimes Mojang puts out "bad" code that doesn't always work. I wouldn't be suprised if in the next few days there is an update to it.

The JVM Arguements, You want to check the box and change the arguement "-Xmx???" to "-Xmx4G" it should be the first arguement.
I apologize if I am causing any frustration.
Nope, frustration is only the fault of the game. Appreciate the help. Unfortunately changing that to 4G didn't make a difference. It showed up on the F3 screen and made the "mem:" line, but didn't help the frame rates
1.8 caused shops in skyblock to stop working, all because of the lock feature they added. Everyone on the server I play on is complaining because the shops no longer work. Skyblock isn't all that fun anymore with no shops.
in 1.8 caves now only render when you can actually see them, if you are by a sea I think it will render the caves that are under it because of a bug, this may also happen while underground.
I am not 100% sure but this may be it. You may need more memory

I plan to test this "water" thing in a bit personally. But probably of your interest given you were going through an underwater tunnel.
