I'm having the same issue. Was working fine on previous version. Deleted folder and downloaded new client and it still does not work. I'm running Windows 7 with 6GB of RAM and the latest Java client. - Help please!
This kind of problem is often caused by an antivirus program. Depending upon how they work they can interfere with MC using the file that it just downloaded. You can temporarily disable your A/V while MC downloads, or whitelist the contents of .minecraft as you prefer.

I mean once I downloaded the latest version from minecraft.net/download, it failed to start up. Problems?
Minecraft needs java 7 if you have at least 2GB of ram on a windows 8 of course it will not work.
