adding ram to minecraft is a tricky thing. sometimes it works sometimes it doesnt. but i think a simple way to explain it would be that. if you get lag from a graphics problem or a cpu performance then adding more ram will not be able to fix that. quite like setting off a million tnt at once is what water is doing. adding more ram will allow for more mods and bigger texture packs being able to see more mobs. or seeing lots of things from a farther distance althoug at that point your gpu and cpu come into play and if they are slow then well youll lag which means there is enough memory to realize that everything is there the quick data has been processed and it will show up but not enough of everything else because then your gpu cant keep up due to textures switching and flying everywhere and doing its things and your cpu cant keep up because of changing what youre looking at constantly.. i for one have gotten the all knowing "minecraft has run out of memory" error message think back as to why.

i am having the same problem. Whenever i log on to minecraft 1.8, it laggs. it skips, and it eats up half of my cpu prossesing core it is terrible that i cant play my favorite servers such as Mineplex and Omega Realm without having to use an outdated version of minecraft :'(
Yeah I found that 1.8 is really buggy and the commands are not working for me also I hope that they fix this issue because this is very annoying and I'm trying to start a let's play with the new version for my channel
This lag was introduced in 1.7 actually; not 1.8. The problem is due to Minecraft updating whenever a chunk is loaded or unloaded. There is a simple mod (library patch, really) for 1.7 that fixes this. I'm sure it will come out for 1.8 soon. http://forum.industrial-craft.net/index.php?page=Thread&threadID=10820 has details on the 1.7.10 version.
Seems alot of the problem with lag has to do with:
1)Outdated graphics Card
2)outdated multi-core processor
3)Not having 64-bit java.
Multi-threading seems to require higher end computers. THat doesn't mean super computers. It means computers made after 2005 with 64-bit windows installled and you MUST use 64-bit java. Or your computer will get rekt.
