Poops and giggles, I went up into the air at the old "Far" render distance of 16 chunks, and placed my viewpoint where we can make an easy comparison.
The first image (left) is at the old 16-chunk "Far" distance
Second image (right) is at the new 32-chunk "Far" distance
Notice it's rendering by the framerate dropping into the low 50s, versus nearly 160 at 16, both showing the EXACT SAME amount of land. Chunks 17 to 32 are not showing up whatsoever.
I noticed this in PSJ's videos as well (only getting about 60 to 70fps, versus 150, but seeing the exact same amount).

This actually happens in single-player worlds as well, but I stumbled upon the answer: needs 2GB RAM. Missed that.
