I launch minecraft, get the updates page, press play and then I get the Mojang logo for a LONG time. If I'm lucky, a partially loaded background on the "single player" page appears. If I press "single player" the game freezes (it was already massively slow and in the process of freezing anyway). This is the error I got after I manually crashed the game.
I'm also experiencing the same issue. I can load realms, but I can't do anything but stare forward without dealing with massive lag, and single player freezes as soon as it's clicked.
With my minecraft I log in and then the mojang screen comes up and then all of a sudden my screen turns black ( I have a macbook ). Before when that happened i could just push the power button and it would go to the single player/multiplayer screen but now it just's stays black and I have to shut it down every time so I can't get into minecraft.
I removed my resource packs from the folder, apparently none of them are compatible with 1.8. My Mojang screen would load and then crash as well, and now it has gotten passed it! Woohoo!
I taught myself a little bit about error codes and figured out that our problem was my graphics card driver. The key was this line in the error code: "Error:0:1 Version number not supported by GL2." I spent several hours learning how to update the driver, which was no small feat. But Minecraft is working for us now. If you have a similar line in your error codes check your driver (On Windows, click "start" then "run," then type in dxdiag. Click "display" and your information about your driver will be there. You can google search to see if that driver is the latest for your card.)
Yeah, what Atrix said is the most likely scenario. This is pretty upsetting to me. I might've seen during the snapshot cycle a minor note about it, but I really wish Mojang had just flashed it in big, red characters "HEY, YOU CAN'T PLAY ANYMORE" in advanced, because finding out this way is just depressing.
The easiest solution is buying a new graphics card/computer.
"easiest" lol
I went ahead and got a driver update for my graphics card and made sure I had the latest Java. It's still not working. I'm convinced that some crazy new OpenGL is now a requirement to play Minecraft.
Hi, I've been having very similar troubles loading 1.8 on an XP laptop. After reading this thread I checked my drivers (GPU is an ati x1600 mobility, completely unsupported now it seems) and after some tinkering* still had no luck. However, the one thing I can add is that by using a utility, one can check if their card and software can support OGL2, available here: http://www.realtech-vr.com/glview/
For what it's worth, my card and current driver support OGL2.1, which I think were spoken of as the "future minimums" for minecraft versions. Since I'm having this problem too, there's still a chance it's another problem.
*My problems have been very similar in the sense the game hangs on the splash screen, once reaching the main menu when left for ~30 minutes (but then not responding). Unfortunately the launcher doesn't update with any information past '[Client thread/INFO]: Created: 512x512 textures-atlas' so I am not completely certain my problem is related to open GL (I do not get the explicit 'version not supported' message) but symptom wise it's still similar.
Other than checking drivers, I've increased the RAM accessible to minecraft using the launcher, reinstalled etc multiple times, and other obvious steps (clean install, no mods, no resource packs etc). Still no luck. I'm going to try submitting a bug report later and see what response I get.
For fullness, it's quite an old laptop with 2GB ram, dual core 2GHz cpu and as stated, mobility x1600amd gpu. It runs 1.7.10 at moderate settings absolutely fine.
I'm in the same boat. I get a few GL ERROR lines, but nothing that explicitly states that OpenGL 2 is the root of the problem.
However, my GPU is terrible, and only supports OpenGL 1.3, so that could be the issue after all. I'm upgrading it in less than a month though as I found a ~$60 GPU that fits in my incredibly old computer and supports OpenGl 4.2 and DirectX 11.
Okay, I did an interesting test just now. I tried loading up the different snapshots for 1.8 because I remembered that I tried out one of them and it worked perfectly fine for me.
What I found out was that the latest one I could load up was 14w29b. All the other snapshots after that do the same thing for me (freeze up on the main menu, and error report has the missing Ghast Fireball), so I'm assuming that something that was added/changed in either 14w30a, 14w30b, or 14w30c ruined 1.8 for me (I'm including all three of those snapshots because the launcher only lets you play the latest 14w#whatever (in this case, 14w30c)).
Anyway, I thought I'd share this with everyone else having issues like me and see if there's a connection here somewhere.

I had done enough searching on Google before coming here that led me to this conclusion. Apparently, people were complaining about the ladder couple of snapshots not working at all for them. I figured since they were snapshots, that it would get fixed. There's no way that problem would persist in a major version. Guess I was wrong. It would be bizarre if they made such a fundamental change (requiring OpenGL2) so casually in a snapshot, so the hopes are there that this is some kind of bug on older computers. Now I'm just straight-up confused and Mojang hasn't said ANYTHING about this.

Help!?!
And it crashes saying the Ghast fireball did not exsist
Same here
What graphics cards do you all have?

Likewise with myself.
