I'm told that when the new version comes out, I will need to start a new Realms world so that the new resources will be generated near the explored starting point.
1). I do not see a way to have multiple worlds in my Realms subscription, nor even a way to delete the current one and start a new one. How can I do this? Will I need to re-invite each of my guests to the new world?
2). I as Realm owner have been able to download that world as a single player save on my PC, but my guests do not seem to be offered this option. Can they do this somehow? If not, how could I send copies of my single player save to them? There seem to be something like 50 individual files split among several folders in that save, which would of course be a chore to send. Is there perhaps a way to simply send them the terrain map?
3). As long as I'm asking, how will the update take place? Will I need to do anything, or will it be like the routine, smaller updates which are handled automatically?
Thanks in advance to anyone who answers, both for the info, and for your patience. I will probably have follow-up questions. (And moderators, if this is in the wrong spot, please feel free to move it.)
Ok, i'll try to answer as best I can, however I don't know everything about Realms.
You might have to purchase multiple Realms if you want multiple worlds running at the same time (feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, anyone). As for other players downloading the Realms world to their computer, I'm not sure they can do that (again, feel free to correct me). I don't think you have to do anything to update Realms servers. Also, who told you that you would have to start a new Realms world when the update comes out? I would think that the 1.8 update would be applied to the Realms world, just like any other update.
Feel free to ask me follow-up questions about any of this information.
I'm told that the new mineral types and such will not be generated in areas already explored, so while starting a new game is not mandatory, it will mean we don't have to hike for days to find the new resources in freshly generated terrain. That's why we want to restart.
Experimentation has shown that I, as Realm owner, can upload any of my single player games, which the replaces the current Realm world under the existing Realm name, with all guests still invited. So that's how I can start a new world. As I said, I can also download a copy of it to preserve the current world, but I still haven't figured out how to give my guests their own copies, if someone would like to help with that.
No problem, glad to help. I'm not sure if it's possible for your guests to download a copy of the Realms server for their own, though. You could just download a copy of the original world, and, when you and your guests wish to continue playing on it, make a copy of the new, "1.8-ified" world and re-upload the old world. Just keep in mind, however, that the singleplayer world that you upload must be 500MB or smaller (once it's a Realms world, though, there are no size limitations, so you can play to your hearts content), and also that there appears to be a limit to how many worlds you can upload/download in a certain amount of time, 3 uploads/downloads per 72-hour period. Unfortunately, this might not be a permanent solution, because if the world gets to be over 500MB, you might not be able to upload it again. However, if you are just planning on doing this a few times, it should be okay.
Sorry for the long reply, and if you have any questions, feel free to ask.
If anybody else wants to know, here's what I did. Downloaded the old one, zipped it, and posted to my guests on Mediafire. Started new single-player worlds until I found one I liked, then uploaded it, where it over-wrote and became the new shared world in my Realms subscription.
