When the pre-release to 1.8 came out I was quite excited, however, upon updating my game and opening my main survival world, I discovered that everything in my world that I had placed, chests, furnaces, ladders, etc. had disappeared. All the items in the chests were gone, and all I had was the items in my inventory. The only thing that was left besides that was the frame of my house with no windows, no chests, etc.
I know that the last time I saved this world (2 months ago) I had all my items and chests and such, but now I am quite shocked at what has happened.
I was wondering if there is anyway to fix this, as I had spent the 2 previous years accumulating items, building my house, finding temples, etc.
If there is no way to fix this, I am quite certain that I will not play Minecraft anymore, since there is no point in trying to start a new world.
(BTW I'm pretty sure I was on snapshot 14w25b or something around there before I updated to pre-release 1.8)
On the top of my head I can't think of any way to fix it other than to do a system restore to a time before you updated. Otherwise, for future reference, Mojang DOES STRONGLY ENCOURAGE that you make a backup of any saves before trying a new version.
The snapshots are using the new format for item names instead of ID codes, thus when you loaded the snapshot your world was coverted, when you dropped back to 1.7.x the game didn't know what these were and removed them.
Unless you made a backup (which Mojang suggest when using a snapshot) your items are gone, you will need to use cheat mode to get them back

I have made a backup that is updated as of June 29th, 2014. After multiple attempts of copying and pasting the backup into the saves and reloading it, it still doesn't show up with items.
I would love an answer to this as well. Every response I have seen to this issue has been, "you should back up your world," but I have found no way to properly update the snapshot to avoid this issue. Am I simply stuck on an outdated snapshot forever if I have had this issue?
