Minecraft will not allow beyond 512 MB of ram, and Minecraft freezes even on 2 render distance. Setting beyond 512 mb min causes it to refuse to launch, saying Picked up JAVA_Options is -Xmx512M
I want to know why is it stuck at this, given I've changed the java options to go beyond it. Here though Minectraft is very low fps, below one per second even at 2 chunks distance, Debug screen shows that when it hits 512MB it freezes and goes back to 300 MB, then goes up quickly and freezes again. Again, this is at incredibly low 2 chunk render distance. I have 6 GB RAM, 64 bit Java I just need some help making it go beyond 512 MB, because Minecraft is unplayable right now.
Minecraft just crashed out of memory error. Please help...
I'm assuming that no other programs are running when you have this issue. I'm also assuming that this is the only piece of software giving you problems and that you're hardware is good.
All I can suggest would be to backup your saves, delete your /.minecraft folder and get a fresh jar (redownload)
If that doesn't help, then you're on your own until someone else comes along. Hopefully it'll work.
The only program I have open is Firefox Nightly x64, and Process Explorer. Right now I'm using my moms laptop that is kind of low power, but was fine until yesterday and today. Anyhow, my computer running windows x64 8.1 is down right now and waiting for a windows 8.1 recovery disk from Microsoft I ordered on the phone. I just want Minecraft to run again.

My guess is you have 32 bit java, download and install the 64 bit java from here -- http://java.com/en/download/manual.jsp
and then after it installs go to control panel > add/remove programs and remove any other versions of java except the 64-bit one you just installed, this will ensure you run the 64-bit version on everything and should give a boost to any java applications you run, and it's recommended to uninstall any older versions of java anyways as they can have vulnerabilities
--Edit--
Just saw that you said you already have 64-bit java, check add/remove programs in control panel and remove any other versions aside from the 64-bit, minecraft may be running the 32-bit version by default, this will assure it uses the 64-bit and is recommended anyways as having multiple different java versions can cause problems, after making sure you only have the 64-bit java version installed and no other versions your java patch under Executable in the launcher settings should be "C:\Program Files\Java\jre7\bin\javaw.exe" confirming it's using the 64-bit since the 32-bit gets installed in "C:\Program Files(x86)", also try changing your JVM argument to -Xmx1024M -Xms1024M this should give you 1G to start with and if the game loads press f3 ingame and it'll tell you the amount of allocated ram in the top right if you didn't already know
Do not have 32 bit java installed at all. Minecraft refuses to launch with this error when I try this: -Xmx1024M -Xms1024M
Error occurred during initialization of VM
Incompatible minimum and maximum heap sizes

That means it's being given that argument somewhere, if it's not from the launcher it must be from java itself. Try this.
Open Control Panel
Click Java
Click the Java Tab
Click "view"
Check under "Runtime Parameters" to see if "-Xmx512M" is set in their which i think it probably is, if so then double click it and delete it.
The trouble is, it is already set to that. Minecraft refuses to budge. The only option I haven't yet tried is rebooting, and I will be back in a couple of minutes to reboot to see if that is wrong with it.

Are you saying that the "-Xmx512M" is in the "Runtime Parameters" in the Java tab of the Java from Control Panel? Because if it is, any Xmx argument set in the Java tab in the Java from Control Panel makes it so you can't change it in the launcher or you will get that error, Minecraft will essentially be stuck using that until you remove it.
No I fixed it. I rebooted and Minecraft worked with the augment. I think JAVA does not work with new options until you reboot or Minecraft doesn't check it. Thinks,.
