Thanks for the response this may be an option down the track but I would like to find out if running mine craft through a proxy with authentication is possible.
Hi guys, I have had some success through a proxy, but it was a bit of a workaround rather than actually working.
Sitting at work looking very busy.. I get around the corporate proxy by opening up an SSH tunnel to my own home PC over port 443 using Putty.
then to forward ports on the work machine to the desired minecraft server and port through the tunnel, and join on 127.0.0.1 - the only problem with this is that it doesnt work for 'online' mode servers because the all powerful java can't access MC authentication servers - even if you specify a valid proxy in the java arguments (java just ignores these most of the time)
Works perfectly for horrible servers where nobody bought the game and everyone is a griefer though... yay!
My next effort is to figure out OpenVPN so that i can join my home network and use that router to get out to the internet. seems to be higher grade material if you want it done securely.
hope that helps.

- minecraft can run behind an authenticated proxy server, does the software support authenticate proxies?
- if not, what ports are required to be open for direct connection to bypass the proxy?
- what is the range of IP addresses that minecraft servers use so if ports need to be opened, we can limit it to the IP addresses required?
look forward to your response.Cheers Quentin.
