Minecraft only requires OpenGL 1.3 at the moment. Minecraft 1.8 may require OpenGL 2.0. As long as the base extensions are hardware accelerated, the software 2.1 features shouldn't be too slow. You just won't get a boost from VBO's and similar new features. The Mojang system requirements page is wrong.

I get a black screen anything higher than 1.7.3, but I can still hear the audio.
I did some research and found this:
However since that is software I am wondering why mine is not working.
The reason Intel 965 chipsets fail to play past 1.7.3 is not because of OpenGL support but because of a known issue with those drivers. The video is wrong. See here: http://hopper.minecraft.net/help/references/intel-4-series-chipsets/ I can play the 1.8 snapshots on the ancient Intel 915 chipset and that only supports OpenGL 1.5. Replacing hardware OpenGL drivers with the MESA software renderer is almost never a valid option. Sure it loads, but framerate is far too low to be playable. This is the solution for the 965 chipset, http://www.eightforums.com/graphic-cards/4418-mobile-intel-series-4-intel-hd-graphics-1st-generation.html but it doesnt work on Windows 8.1, atleast without a lot of work.
I have an old Nvidia Geforce 5950 Ultra FX that allows 2.1 Software that I wish to play around with.
Also please don't request me to upgrade my machine. I have an AMD Radeon HD 7770 in my gaming build. I just want to try out that card in a old build.
