My computer has 8 gb of ram, and 7.86 gb of usable ram. Yet, when I allow minecraft 1.5 Gb of ram, it usually crashes...

Like in the title, minecraft doesn't allow me to give it much more than 1 gb of ram, I have it at 1280mb right now but I'd like to give more. I heard you should give no more than half of your usuable ram, but it wouldn't work with less than half. Help?

you need 64bit java and os to apply more ram to minecraft
