Try Linux, it's like Mac and will run way better than Windows. Windows 8, which came with my ASUS laptop, the activation key seems to be imbeded into the UEFI BIOS. So even they do give you a installation disc, it will be for that laptop specifically and you'll also need a new activation key. Now about VMs, besides Parallels I know of Virtual Box and VMWare Player.
I think you can check your partitions in Disk Utility, but I rarely use a Mac so I'm not sure.
Linux is free, right? Also, if I decide I don't like it, how do I switch back?
Btw, are those programs you mentioned 100% free?
Best server ever is Super Craft Brothers Brawl Servers, server IP ddress is any number from 1-70.cbga.me (e.g. 48.cbga.me, 1.cbga.me, etc.). Try it out, if you like PVP you won't regret it
Those VMs I mentioned by its specific name are free. If I were you I'd make a Clonezilla back up of your drive and also there's this https://www.apple.com/osx/recovery/ . If you use the Linux installation standard presets, it's just going to make a little bit of extra space to put the Linux OS there. Also Linux will always be free, open-source baby, yeah!
