Whenever I try to install HQM [1.7.10] in MultiMC it breaks the game.

and yes, I did install forge for 1.7.10 in the instance, and without HQM it still breaks the game (with forge installed)

Check out this mod, which now has a 1.8 brother to the 1.7 version.
