The problem could be because you're running a 32 bit version of windows 8.1. But before you change it to 64 bit, try restarting your computer. If that doesn't work, go to the search part of your computer, (I beleive the shortcut is windows button, s) and look up %appdata% go to the .minecraft folder. Go to the saves folder and put all those folders on your desktop. Then delete the .minecraft folder. Run minecraft and go into single player. Then go into the new .minecraft folder, then the saves, and put those folders back in. That should help.
