I've been having so much lag lately I haven't been able to play the game. I've been using the latest snapshot, 14w31a, but I still have the same lag with any 1.7 update. Most of the time, I have between 1 and 6 fps, as well as block lag. My fps rarely goes above 8. It's impossible to play.
So far, I've tried:
Turning down my video settings
Making minecraft a top priority with the Task Manager
Deleting unused files and worlds to save space
What should I try? (BEFORE I install optifine or get a new computer, because I don't want to do either)

Yeah, I used to have around 30 fps. When I press the escape button (esc), my fps goes back to normal, but as soon as I exit out of it, my fps goes back down.

Have you gotten a higher frame rate in the past?
